The happy couple celebrate with their family following Mass in the Chapel at Allied Services Meade Street Skilled Nursing in Wilkes-Barre

Mary and Stanley Buckley of Wilkes-Barre celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary today surrounded by family and close friends. They celebrated the values of unconditional love, faith and family that formed the basis of their long life together. Mary and Stanley attended a Mass dedicated to their milestone anniversary at the Chapel inside Allied Services Meade Street Skilled Nursing in Wilkes-Barre, where Mary is a resident. Following a lunch with close family and friends, the home’s staff surprised the couple with a cake and celebration.

Mary has been a resident of resident of Allied Services Meade Street Skilled Nursing in Wilkes-Barre (formerly Little Flower Manor) for the past 6 years. Her devoted husband, Stanley, spends hours each day visiting her at the home. Their family finds proof of their enduring love in the little things; when Stanley comes to the home his clothes always match his wife’s wardrobe. “It just happens,” smiles Stanley.

The couple’s family joke that Stanley married an older woman. Mary Agnes Sakowski was born on March 27, 1928, in her family home in North End, Wilkes-Barre. 9 days later, the North End welcomed another new resident, Stanley Joseph (Buczynski) Buckley, also born in his family home. Mary and Stanley grew up together and attended Coughlin High School. When war broke out in Europe, Stanley joined the Army, serving under General Douglas MacArthur in the Pacific.

On Thanksgiving Day, 1949, Mary and Stanley Buckley were married at St. Mary’s Maternity Parish, Park Avenue in Wilkes-Barre, surrounded by their family. Mary’s sister, Florence, served as maid of honor, and the groom chose his brother, Joseph, to be his best man.

Mary and Stanley began their married life together in North End before moving to the East End. What followed was 70 years of shared memories, experiences and love. Following his time in the Army, Stanley became an insurance agent for Metropolitan and Mary was a cosmetologist and a great cook. Later in life, when Mary’s loyal clients started moving into nursing homes, she would continue to visit and keep them looking stylish.

As the years went by, Mary and Stanley’s love grew. The couple was blessed with a son, Stanley Jr., who married Theresa Zuba in 1979. Today, at 91 years old, Mary and Stanley have 4 grandchildren and one great granddaughter. Their grandchildren are: David Buckley, married to Vaneesa Heeter whose daughter, Fionna, is Mary and Stanley’s great granddaughter; granddaughter Mary, married to Matthew Bosek of Wilkes-Barre; grandson Nicholas Buckley of Wilkes-Barre; and grandson Christopher Buckley and Sklyar Achhammer of Wilkes-Barre.

Today, Mary and Stanley are role models for their family, living a life of unconditional love and devotion, based in the traditions of the Catholic Faith.
