The annual Adopt-a-Family program at Heinz Rehab Pediatric Center
The annual Adopt-a-Family program at Heinz Rehab Pediatric Center provides the opportunity for a few families served by our pediatric team to experience the many joys of the holiday season that they otherwise may not have been able to afford.
Started roughly 20 years ago by Jean Fredmund, Assistant Director of Pediatric Physical Therapy at Allied Services Heinz Rehab Hospital, the Adopt-a-Family program grows and changes from year to year. “Of course there are plenty of toys and games on everyone’s list, but there are also the basic necessities of sheets, pillows and even laundry detergent”, notes Fredmund. This year, through the generosity of the staff at the Heinz Rehab Hospital and Outpatient Centers, the pediatric department has been able to adopt five families. “Some years we have more, some we have less, but there is always a need and the more people that get involved the more families we can help,” said Jean.
On December 21, those five families were able to check a few things off their Christmas lists, including their holiday feast. The Kingston Fire Department also brought in some holiday cheer by donating food baskets filled with fresh fruit, ham or turkey, milk, eggs and more.
A sincere thank you to everyone who is making this holiday a bit brighter for those in need.
