Finding a Lymphedema Expert: Lana Certified Therapist at Allied Services

Diane Jason, OTR/L, CLT/LANA, recently earned re-certification as a Lymphedema Association of North American (LANA) accredited therapist. She is the only LANA-certified therapist in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Re-certification takes place every 6 years and is dependent on the successful completion of continuing education, teaching, or publication related to the field of lymphedema treatment.

Jason treats patients at Allied Services Wilkes-Barre Rehab Center. She received her Certified Lymphedema Therapist certificate in 1999 from the Academy of Lymphatic Studies. In 2003, she obtained her Lymphedema Association of North America (LANA) certification. In addition to the examination, therapists must successfully complete a qualified 135-hour course in Complete Decongestive Therapy to become LANA certified.

The Lymphology Association of North America, LANA, is a non-profit corporation offering a multinational certification to health care professionals who diagnose and/or treat lymphedema and related disorders. Certification by LANA indicates the highest level of competency and dedication to advanced learning, and a higher level of expertise.

Lymphedema is a chronic lymphatic disease that results in disfiguring swelling in one or more parts of the body. It can be hereditary (primary lymphedema) or it can occur after a surgical procedure, infection, radiation, or other physical trauma (secondary lymphedema). Primary lymphedema is rare, affecting 1 in 100,000 individuals, while secondary lymphedema affects approximately 1 in 1000 Americans. It is estimated that there is only 1 Certified Lymphedema Therapist per 100,000 members of the population in the United States.

LANA’s alliance of medical professionals from diverse disciplines utilizes their comprehensive knowledge of the lymphatic system to assess, plan, and provide therapeutic intervention to help restore or maximize function and improve quality of life.
