When patients in hospice, who cares for their pets?

For many hospice patients, concern for a beloved pet can be just as powerful as concern for their own care. Allied Services Hospice & Palliative Care’s Pet Peace of Mind® program exists to ease that worry - and a recent Scranton Times-Tribune article beautifully illustrates how.
Through Pet Peace of Mind, hospice patients receive help with nearly every aspect of pet care. Specially trained volunteers assist with daily needs like dog walking and litter box cleaning, arrange and sometimes cover veterinary visits, deliver pet food, and provide temporary or ongoing care when a patient is hospitalized. When needed, the program also works with animal welfare partners to help find loving new homes for pets, ensuring they are safe, healthy, and cared for long after their owner’s passing.
The article shares the story of Scott Lewis, whose wish to visit the Philadelphia Flower Show was made possible because a Pet Peace of Mind volunteer lovingly cared for his elderly pug, Maui. Knowing his companion was safe gave Scott the freedom to enjoy a final joyful experience — and peace in his last weeks.
