Every child’s journey is unique, shaped by determination, support, and the people who believe in them along the way. At Allied Services John P. Moses, Esq. Pediatric Rehabilitation Center in Wilkes-Barre, one young patient’s story reflects the power of perseverance, partnership, and early intervention.
Dominic V., who turns eight this April, has been part of the Allied Services family since he was just two years old. Nearly six years later, his growth continues to inspire everyone around him.
Trusting a Mother’s Instinct
As a toddler, Dominic was diagnosed with Global Developmental Delay. A child psychologist recommended occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech therapy to support his development.
After carefully researching her options, his mother, Erica, chose Allied Services John P. Moses Esq. Pediatric Rehab Center in Wilkes-Barre - a decision she says changed the course of her son’s life. With expert care, Dominic was made to feel comfortable in his therapy settings, and the consistency of care became one of the greatest strengths of his journey.
From day one, Dominic has worked with Occupational Therapist Lynn Dunay, OTR/L, and Speech Language Pathologist Erin Poperowitz, MS, CCC-SLP. That continuity of care has meant everything to his family.
“The communication between OT, PT, and Speech has been excellent,” Erica shares. She values that the therapists take time to explain their techniques and provide resources, apps, and exercises so progress can continue at home.
Over the years, those professionals have become more than providers.
“They feel like family now,” Erica shares, describing Allied Services as a true team effort focused entirely on Dominic’s well-being. She says she appreciates the organization’s ability to retain experienced, certified staff, allowing Dominic to see the same trusted therapists year after year.
A Rare and Unexpected Diagnosis
Dominic’s path has not been simple. In May 2023, his diagnosis was changed to an Intellectual Disability Genetic Disorder called GABRA2. This extremely rare disorder affects the GABRA2 gene, and Dominic’s specific genetic variant is believed to be the only confirmed case of its kind worldwide, with fewer than 30 individuals globally affected by the root mutation.
Before that diagnosis, Dominic was nonverbal until about age four. While many physicians initially suspected autism, Erica felt in her heart that something else was going on. Her search for answers eventually led her to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), where a neurologist identified the rare genetic disorder.
The diagnosis brought new questions and uncertainty. The disorder is associated with frequent seizures - thankfully, Dominic has not experienced that symptom. Doctors explained that the condition could potentially lead to either loss of function or increased function physically and mentally over time. After extensive DNA testing, the results were inconclusive as to what the future holds.
Despite the unknowns, Dominic continues to move forward - one milestone at a time.
Remarkable Progress
Today, Dominic participates in some form of therapy each day - whether speech, physical, occupational, or behavioral - he continues to improve. His speech development has been especially extraordinary. Once nonverbal, Dominic can now hold full conversations with his older brother, Jason.
Speech Therapist Erin Poperowitz has witnessed that transformation firsthand.
“Dominic is where he is at today due to his hard work and perseverance. Equally as important, he is where he is today due to the support of his Mother who has advocated for him in every aspect of his life. I admire them both, and am so thankful to have been a part of his journey.”
Dominic’s growth extends beyond the therapy gym. He now attends Pittston Area School District, supported through an autistic support group, but he does not require a one-on-one aide and participates in general education classes. He reads independently and genuinely enjoys school - something Erica once feared might never happen.
Occupational Therapist Lynn Dunay credits Dominick’s mom and family for his remarkable progress.
“Dominic's growth and achievements are a true reflection of the dedication he and his mother bring to his journey. With ongoing support at home, careful coordination of his team, and her tireless determination to ensure he has every possible opportunity, she has created a strong foundation for his continued success.”
The Importance of Family
Dominic’s older brother, Jason, plays a meaningful role in his life. The two share a close bond, spending time playing video games like Roblox and Call of Duty.
Jason says he’s glad his brother receives the support he needs at Allied Services and thinks he’s come a long way from when he was little.
The Power of Early Intervention
As Erica reflects on their journey, she believes Dominic’s success is directly tied to early intervention and the therapists who have supported him every step of the way. She is deeply grateful and confident that without Allied Services, Dominic would not be where he is today.
Dominic’s story serves as a powerful reminder that with early intervention, expert care, strong advocacy, and unwavering perseverance, children with developmental disabilities can achieve more than anyone imagined.
