Empowered to Work: Dave’s Path to Success

Allied Services’ Work Services Program continues to create meaningful employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities - and one recent success story is hitting it out of the park.

The Work Services Program assists high school students and adults with disabilities in securing and maintaining competitive employment in the community. Through the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR), the program provides supported employment services, job shadowing opportunities, paid work experiences, and vocational assessments designed to help individuals identify and achieve their career goals.

A key part of that success begins with preparation. Ashley Duesler, Coordinator of Community Employment at Allied Services, works closely with individuals to develop resumes, complete job applications, prepare and practice for interviews, and connect directly with employers to secure meaningful employment opportunities.

Once employment is secured, ongoing support ensures long-term success. Allied Services Job Coaches David Warunek and Jeff Lewis provide on-the-job guidance, helping individuals learn job tasks, build confidence, and navigate any hurdles that may arise in the workplace.

A Challenging Journey Leads to a Home Run Opportunity

In November 2024, Allied Services received a referral for supported employment services for Dave Gammon. Due to the nature of his disability, finding the right work environment presented challenges. The team remained committed to identifying an opportunity that would align with Dave’s skills, interests, and support needs.

That opportunity came through in an exciting community partnership.

Shawn Reilly, President and General Manager of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders - the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Yankees - reached out to Margy Fiscus, Allied Services’ Executive Director of Vocational Services, to learn more about the Work Services Program.

In November 2025, Allied Services met with Shawn Reilly, Brandon Brzenski, Stadium Operations Manager, and Duane Marbaker, Director of Stadium Operations, to discuss janitorial openings at PNC Field in Moosic, Pennsylvania.

When the opportunity presented itself, the team immediately recognized that Dave would be a strong fit for the role. He accepted the offer enthusiastically and shared how excited he was to begin working at the stadium. Several team meetings were held to coordinate Dave’s schedule and transportation between Allied Services staff and his group home team, ensuring a smooth transition into employment.

Dave officially began his position on January 6, 2026 and is currently receiving job coaching support through OVR. He will continue to receive long-term support through his waiver funding to ensure continued success in his role.

Thriving at the Stadium

In his role with the RailRiders, Dave performs custodial services that help keep the stadium running smoothly. His responsibilities include daily cleaning tasks such as vacuuming, mopping, dusting, restroom sanitation, and trash and recycling removal - essential work that supports both staff and fans throughout the season.

Dave says, “My favorite part is being at the stadium. It’s an amazing place to work.”

His supervisors agree.

“He’s a fantastic worker - self-sufficient, polite, and very happy to help out whenever needed,” said Brandon Brzenski, Stadium Operations Manager.

Brandon also shared the organization’s enthusiasm for the partnership: “We’re so excited to be part of this program. It’s fulfilling to give back to the community, and we want to do as much as we can to continue this great partnership.”

Building Strong Community Partnerships

Dave’s success reflects the power of collaboration between Allied Services and local employers who support inclusive hiring and community engagement.

The Work Services Program hopes to place more individuals with the RailRiders and continue building relationships with employers throughout the region, creating opportunities that empower individuals with disabilities to achieve independence, confidence, and long-term career success.

Together with our community partners, Allied Services is creating workplaces where everyone has the chance to thrive.
