Careers in Focus: Environmental Services

If the term “environmental services” conjures up images of people planting trees or testing water quality, you could be forgiven. When used in reference to healthcare, it describes the process highly trained support service staff conduct to clean and disinfect medical equipment, patient rooms, and other common areas within healthcare facilities. Custodians and janitorial staff are members of the environmental services teams that play a critical role in hospitals and healthcare facilities around the globe.

Catherine Hall is Director of Environmental Services at Allied Services Meade Street Skilled Nursing in Wilkes-Barre. She joined Allied Services during the height of the pandemic, bringing more than 30 years of experience in environmental services to her new role and the challenge of keeping residents, patients, and employees safe.

“My team is the first line of defense when it comes to infection,” says Catherine.”We work with the facilities team, nursing, and administration, to ensure that every part of the facility is clean, sanitized, and safe for residents and staff.”

Catherine says she takes pride in her work and in knowing that her team is doing a good job.

“It’s black and white. Either something is clean, or it isn’t,” she says. “It’s also rewarding when you know that the residents are happy with your work.”

Catherine says she enjoys the relationships she builds with the residents and how her work is about more than providing a clean and safe environment.

“Many of my staff live locally and know the communities, friends, and family of the residents they’re caring for. They come into the residents’ rooms every day. They chat with them, make them feel comfortable; they’re a connection to the outside world.”
