Careers in Focus: Recreational Therapy

As soon as you meet Hailey Williams, you know that she is a people person. Her face lights up when she talks to you and her warmth and openness come across right away.

These traits have made Hailey a valued and popular member of the care team at Allied Services Meade Street Skilled Nursing in Wilkes-Barre. Hailey joined the team in 2013. She was recently promoted to the role of Staffing Coordinator, a job that is both demanding and critical to patient care.

Before her promotion, Hailey worked with the activities department. Recreational Therapy Aides play an important role for patients and residents that shouldn't be overlooked.

"I worked with the residents one-on-one and in small groups" says Hailey. "We might be playing bingo, doing crafts, or listening to music, but at the end of the day, we're spending time together doing something fun and social."

Under the direction of the Activities Director, they plan, organize, and implement a variety of individual and group activities designed to meet the needs of residents. The activities department provides opportunities for residents to pursue hobbies, share positive experiences with other residents and staff. These activities can provide cognitive stimulation, physical health benefits or simply act as a fun pastime for residents.

"What I loved most was seeing the residents' faces" says Hailey. "I got to engage with the residents and be a highlight in their day."

Hailey lives in Wilkes-Barre. She attended GAR High School.
