A growing group of second-year medical students from Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine is partnering with Allied Services Hospice & Palliative Care to ensure that no patient spends their final moments alone. Through the No One Dies Alone (NODA) Foundation, these students volunteer to sit bedside with patients in Scranton and Wilkes-Barre who may not have family or loved ones available to be present at the end of life.
Launched locally in 2022, the NODA program has become a meaningful extension of Allied Services’ mission to provide compassionate, patient-centered care. For the students, the experience offers a powerful lesson in empathy, presence, and the human side of medicine—often described as one of the most impactful parts of their training.
Allied Services caregivers share that the students’ quiet companionship brings comfort, dignity, and peace to patients nearing the end of life. Many volunteers say the opportunity to serve in such a profound way has shaped their understanding of hospice care and strengthened their desire to support vulnerable populations.
