New no-cost program for people living with Parkinson’s Disease

New no-cost program for people living with Parkinson’s Disease

Allied Services is introducing a new program to benefit people living with Parkinson’s disease (PD). The program is supported by a community grant from the Parkinson’s Foundation and is free to Allied Services patients and community members living with PD.

Beginning in Fall 2022, Allied Services will offer twice-weekly exercise and yoga classes designed specifically for people living with Parkinson’s disease. A monthly support group will be hosted for people living with Parkinson’s disease and their caregivers.

"Thanks to the Parkinson's Foundation, Allied Services is able to offer northeastern PA's Parkinson's community expanded opportunities to live well with Parkinson's” commented Kristina Dorkoski, PT, DPT, NCS, CEEAA. Dorkoski works with patients at Allied Services Wilkes-Barre Rehab Center. She is experienced in treating neurological conditions and holds advanced certifications in Parkinsons’ specific treatment protocols including Parkinson’s Wellness Recovery.

“This grant will allow us to start new Parkinson's-specific exercise classes that are fun, functional, and address the mind-body connection. Our support group will provide shared learning opportunities and hope for people with Parkinson's and their care partners,” said Dorkoski.

The new program will utilize the Parkinson Wellness Recovery® approach. Parkinson Wellness Recovery® (PWR!) is a research-based Parkinson’s specific treatment approach that targets the multiple motor, sensory, cognitive and emotional symptoms of Parkinson Disease. PWR!Moves® are dynamic, functional exercises that target the specific deficits that affect normal mobility in Parkinson’s. PWR!Moves® help you mitigate symptoms and rebuild functionality, no matter how you incorporate them into your life.

The program will be offered free of charge at Allied Services Wilkes-Barre Rehab Center at 150 Mundy Street in Wilkes-Barre. Pre-registration is required.

** Please note: this program ran from September 2022 to June 2023.
