Autism Programs at Allied Services

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability caused by differences in the brain. The term refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 44 children in the United States today.

Autism may be accompanied by sensory sensitivities and medical issues such as gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, seizures or sleep disorders, as well as mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression and attention issues.

Treatments for autism aim to reduce symptoms and support the child’s quality of life. Interventions can take place at school, in the home, and with health care professionals.

At Allied Services, autistic children can benefit from physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy interventions individualized for their needs.

  • Physical therapy to improve fine motors skills or larger movements of the trunk and body
  • Occupational therapy to help children gain independence in daily activities such as dressing, bathing, and eating
  • Sensory integration interventions
  • Feeding therapy or picky eaters program
  • Social skills
  • Speech therapy and augmentative communication devices
