Hope for people living with scoliosis: introducing the Schroth Method at Allied Services

Scoliosis is a three-dimensional abnormality of the spine and trunk. Historically, Scoliosis treatments were limited to bracing or surgery. Today, there is an additional nonsurgical treatment option available: the Schroth Method.

The Schroth Method is a personalized physical therapy regimen that can only be directed and supervised by a Schroth certified physical therapist. It uses curve specific exercises for each patient to return the curved spine to a more natural position. The goal of Schroth exercises is to de-rotate, elongate and stabilize the spine in a three-dimensional plane.

The treatment approach can be used to treat scoliosis patients of all ages and can be utilized to treat in all stages of scoliosis, alongside bracing and following surgery. Outcomes of a Schroth therapy program may include:

  • Reduction or arresting of curve progression
  • Improved posture
  • Improved core stability and strength
  • Improved self appearance
  • Easier breathing
  • Less pain
  • Improved overall movement patterns and function
  • Improved self-management and understanding of the spine
  • Better spine and pelvic alignment
  • Family and patient education
