Bob C.
Spotlights
Bob C. has become engrossed in training for Ironman 70.3 Princeton. The race is a combination of a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride, and 13.1 mile run. Bob is running for Stomp the Monster Charity in remembrance of his late uncle, Rich Currila, who passed away from throat cancer.
On Sunday, June 29th, Bob set out on a 25-mile bike ride. His sister and brother-in-law planned to meet him afterwards. The next thing Bob remembers is lying down on his back porch.
When Bob arrived home, his sister greeted him. She took one look at him and asked, “Why are you bleeding.” Bob had no answer for her. Then Bob began to ask her questions, “where is my phone” when it was in his hand and “where is my bike” when it was right next to him. His sister knew there was something wrong and took Bob to the hospital.
Bob was taken to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center to get a CT scan of his brain. After checking an app on his phone that allows him to keep track of his speed throughout his ride, he noticed it read 0 mph for two minutes at a point in his ride. That’s when he realized he must have fallen, which resulted in a concussion. Bob said, “If I wasn’t wearing my helmet, my injury could have been more fatal than just a concussion.”
Bob was then referred to Dr. Michael Raymond at Heinz Rehab Hospital in Wilkes-Barre. The Brain Injury Program at Heinz Rehab Hospital is one of the nation’s leading brain injury rehabilitation programs and a credentialed ImPACT concussion management provider. Utilized by the NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB, ImPACT is a research-based software tool that evaluates multiple aspects of neurocognitive function including memory, attention, brain processing speed, reaction time, and post-concussion symptoms.
Following testing at Heinz Rehab Center, Bob was put on a week’s rest, to allow time for his brain to heal. Happily, he has since been cleared to return to work and is back out on his bike, training for his first Ironman 70.3.
“Allied did a great job handling me and convincing me that taking a week off from work and training was for my best interest.”
