Losing a loved one is one of the most difficult experiences a person can face. Loss can have a profound effect on our body and spirit. The mind-body approach of yoga can help reduce the stress reaction, quiet the mind and soothe the spirit. Yoga invites us to move into our bodies in a deeply compassionate way so that we can begin to experience our grief in a way that is self-supportive and nurturing.

Healing Yoga combines the ancient practice of yoga with a model of bereavement support to create a safe and sacred space to begin the healing process. Hatha yoga postures are offered to nurture the heart and relieve the physical manifestations of grieving while guided meditation and relaxation are used to encourage students to journey and explore their grief in a supportive environment.

Healing Yoga is designed for all levels and all types of grief; such as mourning the recent or previous passing of a loved one, a job, even a pet. No prior yoga experience is necessary. Movements and meditation will be performed while using a standard chair, therefore no yoga mat or special equipment is required. Modifications and adaptations will be provided to those students with injuries or health concerns.

Classes will be held every Wednesday from 4:45 p.m. in the Boardroom at Allied Services Outpatient Center, 475 Morgan Highway, Scranton. Participants can attend one or as many sessions as they would like.
