Tommy Casey
When it comes to this year’s “Ryan’s Run 3” slogan of “Inspiring Fitness – Challenging Disability – Changing Lives” Thomas Casey of Scranton puts this motto into play everyday. As the owner and head coach of CrossFit Scranton (CFS), Tommy or “Yoda” as his CrossFit family knows him, helps nearly 100 athletes everyday face and break fitness barriers regardless of their age, weight, or disability.
“Life is about progression, not perfection” Tommy said.
Tommy has made a name for himself in the Scranton area as one of the first fitness fanatics to bring CrossFit to Northeastern Pennsylvania. CrossFit is an exercise program that’s sweeping the world which focuses on everyday functional movements (i.e. jumping, squatting, lifting, etc.) done at a high intensity. Tommy began his search for a complete method of health and training 26 years ago. After spending years as a personal trainer and doing traditional gym weight lifting methods, Tommy was later introduced to the sport of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Martial arts eventually led Tommy to CrossFit and a new career.
Although the ING New York City Marathon will be Tommy’s first big race of this distance to date, he’s excited to put his CrossFit training to the test and his ability to give back to kids and adults with disabilities at Allied Services. Tommy, who’s competed in various CrossFit competitions, is energized for a new challenge and to be able to join his good friend/fellow CrossFitter Ryan Leckey in the streets of the Big Apple come race day. Tommy is also planning to rally the CrossFit community in October for a fundraising workout to benefit “Ryan’s Run 3.”
