Bone Density Testing

WomanThe Bone Density Testing Center at John Heinz Rehab in Wilkes-Barre and Allied Rehab in Scranton, offer on-site testing for osteoporosis utilizing a DXA Scan.

Osteoporosis is a disease that reduces the strength of your bones, causing them to become brittle and prone to fractures. Once lost, bone cannot be replaced. One out of two women and one out of five men suffer an osteoporosis-related fracture. Additionally, effects of osteoporosis can include height loss, back pain, rib pain, abdominal pain, respiratory problems and lasting disability.

Testing for Bone Density

The test is a simple, painless, noninvasive procedure that measures your bone mineral density, or bone mass, in your body’s three most vulnerable areas. These areas include:

  • wrist
  • femoral neck (part of your hip)
  • lumbar spine (your lower back)

Your results will be compared to a reference population whose age, sex and racial background are similar to yours (age match comparison). Your results are also compared to an average (mean) one mineral density of adult’s aged 25-30 (when bone mineral density is at its peak).

Your results, in each area, will fall within one of the following categories:

Normal if your T-score is –1.0 or better
Osteopenia or Low Bone Mass if your T-score is – 1.0 to –2.5
Osteoporosis if your T-score is –2.5 or worse
